My Collaboration with Richard Haines
I had the privilege of collaborating with fashion illustrator and blogger Richard Haines as part of an art show for Bushwick Open Studios. We had both been featured as Tuesday People on Bushwick Daily, a blog run by the wonderful and excellent Katarina Hybenova, and the concept for the show was that pairs of Tuesday People would create projects on each other.
So Richard and I met at The High Line a couple Sundays ago, me with my video camera, him with his sketchpad. We soon discovered that Manhattan was not the place for us since there were too many tourists around and Richard wasn't "feeling the vibe." And then it started raining and we were all kinds of in trouble.
So we hit up the L Train and headed straight to Williamsburg where it was sunny and swarming with well-dressed Brooklynites for Richard to bring to life on paper. We ran into a great subway musician, hung out in McCarren Park, and had an overall awesome time. Over the course of the day I got to talk to Richard about his super popular blog, What I Saw Today, his philosophy on drawing, and the success that he's found since moving to Brooklyn. Then I spent a couple days editing it all down into a 15 minute video, which I think came out superb! Richard was an easy subject, and he really gave me some great material to work with, which is always crucial.
Being assigned a project is never easy, especially when it's about somebody else's work. So many things can go wrong, the most obvious being that you don't get along with that person. However, Richard and I had a very enjoyable experience together and I can only hope for more collaborations like it. Richard is an awesome guy, an interesting character, and most of all, an incredible artist.
Please check out the video that I made from my day with him! It's titled, quite simply, HAINES.
